Coyote Creek Trail

The Coyote Creek Trail borders the Market Park master planned transit community and is part of a significant open space network for the site’s planned 3,600 residential units, offices and retail facilities. Working with KB Homes, San Jose Department of Public Works, and The City’s Recreation and Neighborhood Services, HMH designed and created construction documents for an extension of the trail north of Berryessa Road.
Consistent with The City’s Coyote Creek Trail Master Plan, this quarter-mile link will serve as an access point to more than 600 residences when the north side of Berryessa Road  (formerly Flea Market parking area) is fully developed. A gateway monument and specialized pavement identifies the entry to this portion of the multi-use trail.
HMH designed the extension along with a regional stormwater retention basin and a biotreatment basin, the first application of large stormwater treatment in the San Jose Area. The treatment area borders the west portion of the trail, which, along with the creek banks, creates a rich nature setting for walkers and bicyclists. Canopy trees and an access road into the sites north of Berryessa Road border the east portion of the trail. HMH also coordinated riparian migration, or preservation of the creek vegetation zone, with H.T. Harvey & Associates.

Bruzzone Park

Adjacent to the Coyote Creek Trail which borders the Market Park neighborhood, the future Bruzzone Park is part of a significant open space network for a planned 3,600 residential units, offices and retail facilities.
For the 3.5-acre future Bruzzone Park, HMH designed with an emphasis on recreation. The park centers on a multipurpose central turf area for junior sports and also includes a tennis court, a training circuit, and a bocce court. HMH utilizes an orchard meadow motif on the paved memorial plaza, which will hold seating and a shade structure. An entrance to Coyote Trail is prominently featured. And in response to community input, the future Bruzzone Park features a large dog park that offers separate areas for small and large dogs along with canine amenities.
The design includes flood control infrastructure for the protection of the local neighborhood. HMH has accommodated a water retention area that serves to capture and control the disbursement of excess water to Coyote Creek, should a flood event occur.

Blossom Hill Park Trail Renovation

HMH worked with the Town of Los Gatos to replace pavement and increase accessibility along a 1/3 mile long trail through the heart of Blossom Hill Park. The work was performed in conjunction with a parallel pathway lighting project to increase the safety and use of the trail.
Completed on an accelerated schedule, HMH met early with Town’s engineers to walk the site and visualize proposed improvements.  Though a multidisciplinary approach, HMH provided design services addressing compliance with the handicap accessibility and flooding concerns, while preserving existing trees and upgrading park amenities. With wider pathways meeting federal guidelines, the parks bathrooms, tennis courts and concession stand can now be accessed by the entire community.

Boulevard Park

Santa Clara’s Boulevard Park was planned around an existing Camphor tree and provides a quiet location from the urban life surrounding the site. The quiet private park oasis features a variety of outdoor amenities that include picnic tables, a children’s play area, a large swathe of lawn for relaxation or recreation, game tables, a rose garden with private seating areas, and a ring of tall palm trees. All features have been designed to be accessible to all users. The palm trees originally located on the Underwriter’s Laboratory site, were maintained off site and then relocated into the park for a dramatic instant impact.

River Oaks Parkway

This 5-acre turnkey public park was constructed as an amenity to the Crescent Village Apartment Homes project in North San Jose.  It features a large open turf field for active and passive recreational uses, picnic areas, a tot lot with playground structure, lighted tennis courts, a half-basketball court and walking trails. HMH provided civil engineering, stormwater compliance and construction services for the project.
The drainage system for the park was designed to fully utilize landscaping and pervious surfaces for infiltrating and filtering stormwater runoff.  Runoff from impervious surfaces drains to adjacent landscaping and decomposed granite, with no areas of directly connected impervious surface within the park boundaries.  Runoff that doesn’t infiltrate into the landscaping discharges into a large landscaped swale that meanders through the park.  The swale mimics a natural stream and contains biotreatment cells to provide additional runoff treatment.  All of the stormwater treatment controls were designed according to current LID design standards. Existing mature redwood, poplar and oak trees on the site were preserved and incorporated into the landscape theme for the park.

Martial Cottle Park

Martial Cottle Park showcases the area’s farming past and celebrates the agricultural heritage of Santa Clara Valley. The park showcases many aspects of gardening in this region, from native plants to vegetables to fruit trees and more. The extraordinary presence of this park provides a unique learning environment for the public, with community hands-on training to support and encourage healthy communities and ecosystems through sustainable landscape practices. Among such practices features water conservation, green waste reduction and local sustainable gardening classes for the youth and adults to partake in.
HMH assisted the Santa Clara chapter of the Master Gardeners in the continued development of the demonstration garden at Martial Cottle park. Services included land surveying, grading and drainage for stormwater conveyance, soils analysis for location and types of soils based on county data and landscape architectural master plan renderings for potential future build out of the site. Due to limited budgets on this project HMH provided a professional services discount to get the client what was needed to do this first phase of work.

Garden To Table at Taylor Street Farm

Back in October 2013, local non-profit Garden to Table Silicon Valley decided to install 2,500 square feet of raised beds to develop Taylor Street Farm. The goal was to educate people how to grow their own food and empower them to take control of their food system. The mission to create a sustainable, local food system that builds community, improves access to healthy foods, and teaches residents to cultivate their own fruits, vegetables and herbs contributes to fostering passionate individuals striving to create the world we wish for ourselves and everyone.
To implement this vision, Garden to Table Silicon Valley’s Taylor Street Farm seeks to inspire a more equitable, nutritious, and just food system through community and engagement. Ideally, the motto is “growing the future through community-based agriculture.”
HMH helped to develop a Master Plan for the project by coordinating with farm owners to ideate for future expansion of the farm, sustaining its purpose. As such, HMH created exhibits to layout new greenhouses, demonstration areas and event spaces to keep everyone connected and eager to learn.
“HMH is helping us redesign our space to include more public seating, art and space for community classes and events,” explained Paul Monaco.

Shoreline Athletic Fields

HMH collaborated with Tetra Tech BAS to provided landscape architecture and civil engineering services for the new community Sports Park/Athletic Field which includes batting cages, children’s playground, and ancillary Parking Lots on the former Shoreline Landfill site (12.6 acres). The project design included planting basins with impermeable liners, drip irrigation and subdrains to prevent nuisance water from penetrating the cap while still allowing for planting over the cap.
The biotreatment cells were designed as a naturalistic feature of the site and included decorative boulders, drought tolerant grasses, and river rock. These elements created a visually aesthetic and green functioning solution to stormwater runoff. A 0.75 acre burrowing owl habitat was protected and restored on the south side of the project. This area was hydroseeded with a specialty seed mix that bolsters the owls’ habitat. This site was further developed by the City’s wildlife specialist to continue to protect the owl species.
